At a workshop, there are a number of photographers working with a couple. But I figured out a sure fire way to get rid of the rest of my group. Trespass. Turns out they weren't very daring and sort of timid. I saw some cute surfboards behind a house near the beach and took the couple to it, and up on the front porch, and I looked around and all the other photographers were still out on the street. So I know for a fact, no one else has these shots. :) All mine. And now Dmitri and Sandra's.. the cute models who are also a very talented wedding photography team right here in Maui.

So if you are a bit daring and would love some unique photos, give me a call, or a text, or an email. Im not picky.

If you read this blog at all, you know I am a huge fan of Film is Not Dead. I went to Jonathan Canlas's workshop last year and this year I hosted the workshop at my house. I cannot speak highly enough of the workshop (even on the second go round) and want to share some of my images from the workshop over the next few weeks.

Meet Leah and Justin. They work at Paia Tattoo Parlor and I know them because (and no I have don't have tattoos although they make it tempting) they were kind enough to exhibit my Mom's art work right after her death. She knew about the exhibit before she died and I believe it made her happy. So I am forever indebted.

And they are hands down the best tattoo parlor in Maui.

The great bouquet is from Dellables and A Maui Wedding Day helped plan the shoot.

My New Years Resolution | Maui Wedding Photography

Last year I blogged every day for a few months. People came and read my blog. Amazingly, the more open I was, the more they read. Then life got busier and I blogged weekly but not daily. I didn't talk about the personal so much. And what do you know? People were not as interested.

So my New Years Resolution is to blog every weekday starting January 1. And to put my heart and my life into it. I am starting early. (I have never been very patient at all.)

Jessica Lorren is a rad wedding photographer in Florida. She is also my internet friend. But she came to Maui and I went and met her in person. We cruised for a couple of hours through one of my most favorite parts of Maui -- Paia and Hookipa Beach. It poured rain. And then it was sunny. Typical Hawaii. We trespassed and climbed fences and shot photos. Typical me.

I will see you guys tomorrow. Can't fail on resolution before the New Year even starts, right?

When Jess and Andy wanted to take family photos and they told me it had to be in front of old corrugated metal garage door, I knew it would be a fun shoot. These guys are a fantastic family. The kids swim, wrestle, surf, play basketball and lord knows what else. Andy runs the Young Life ministry on Maui and coaches the surf team at Lahainaluna high school and a million other youth oriented activities. This is a great family.

and yes, I have been shooting weddings as well. Just so many family sessions at Christmas time!

Stacy + Joe | Maui Beach Wedding featured on Style Me Pretty

This is one of my absolute favorites.

First, Stacy and Joe. So fun, so like-minded. She's a wedding photographer in Florida herself.

Second, the location. The beach were my kids were baptised. The beach where my Mom's ashes were spread. Next door to the church were me and mine were married --Keawala'i Church.

Third, the photos. We had fun. And it shows.

And finally, what Stacy said upon viewing the photos, "Whooo hoooo! Who has the coolest wedding photos ever? We do!! I'm thrilled, thank you so much! I love how artsy they are, they are going to make our walls beautiful. You are the best!"

I am trying to dial in the focus and film because I am actually shooting some clients on Saturday at the beach and we decided to part of the family shoot in the water with surfboards. Its a jam packed weekend, a sunset family shoot, a early morning family shoot with some water fun, then off to a wedding all before 11 a.m.

I am so looking forward to it.

This super cute couple called me AFTER their wedding. Seems they got married on Oahu but didn't bother with a photographer. They wanted photographs after all they decided but not even a full session, just a short mini session (20-30 minutes). Since they were staying at the Ritz Kapalua, just a few minutes from my house, I thought why not. They were super relaxed and very happy. Just married but already a well established couple with Hana's beautiful daughter Xena in tow. Enjoy.

I did a crazy thing this Fall. I decided to start and run the Sacred Heart School's cross country team. I wasn't completely insane.. I got my friend and really amazing runner, Sarah Clark to co-coach. But still.

We ended up having a ball. The pluses? The season is ultra short. The kids are super fun. Everyone ran faster and better. My kids ran last year without a team, so it was definitely more fun this time around. The minuses? None spring to mind. Just the time. Always time.

Why I Shoot Film and What it Means to You | Maui Wedding Photography

My shooting film only means that my photos have amazing color, depth, and luminosity. Besides that, its all the same as a digital shooter. My film is developed and scanned by the top lab in the world (Richards Photo Lab in Hollywood) and then they send me the digital files. The files go up onto my online gallery where you can download them, order a DVD, order prints or enlargements or an album.

You can see my online galleries at http://www.buyprints.wendylaurel.com/. It's very simple to use. Honestly, the only difference for you between me and a digital shooter is the quality of the images and color that film provides (in my opinion).

Why I shoot film is easy to answer. The colors. The look of the film. The satisfaction I get from shooting film. The challenge and skill required. I learned on digital but film is the reason I love photography. And one of the reasons you will love my photographs.

We love to go to the little beach just down the street from our house. We just throw on swimsuits, no shoes, grab a towel and are out the door.

Swim for an hour, pile in the car wet and head back home. Simple.

Simple is the key to having four children. I don't pack huge bags of snacks. I don't bring loads of toys. Just a quick trip and lots of imagination.

This day was all about Mermaids. Anyone seen the show H2O? It was all about that. Even little Noa was Zane.

A Maui beach on a Wednesday night? During school? Whoever heard of such a thing? Not me. I'm usually on the schedule.. homework, dinner, and early to bed.

But Jack's parents don't know about that..... yet. Jack is only 3 so when he had his birthday party on a Wednesday evening at the beach, we had to go. He is one of Noa's favorite little friends.

We ended having such a nice time at the beach at sunset on a Wednesday. Definitely will be doing that again. A few of my shots from that day on my playtime camera.. my norita 66. It is a very old school camera. All manual. No battery needed. And its goes CLUNK when I pull the shutter. But I love it so.

So hey. If you are my facebook friend or my real life friend (as if there is a difference), then you may know that my mom passed away yesterday morning. In peace. At my home. On her own terms.

And while my mom was a good mom, she was an even better grandma. So today, I am going to share some fun photos of three of her favorite things: Noa, Noelle, and Hannah (Nalu was M.I.A. at video game design camp during this roll of film - but thats another story).

Just a bright new day. With lots of blue. Just the way she would have wanted it. And yes, this wall is in Lahaina. Shot on my contax 645, f 2, with 1 roll of Portra 400.

In case you are wondering.. yes. They are as loud as they look.

Lauren + Tae | Maui Wedding Photography on Style Me Pretty

I am excited and honored today to be featured on Style Me Pretty.

Lauren + Tae had a beautiful wedding at Gannon's Wailea. They are both Korean, so their mothers wore the traditional Korean wedding dresses, which were beautiful and colorful. It was a beautiful sunny Maui day, which started off at the Hotel Wailea where the bride got ready. And some bride's family portraits under the amazing willow tree.

Then off to the ceremony and reception at Gannon's. With amazing tables and flowers, plus Gannon's property and view, it was just perfect.

The day after the wedding, Lauren put on her Korean wedding dress for some bride + groom portraits out in Paia.

Precious Little Time

I don't know how to say this, except to say it.
My mom has throat cancer. Its advanced.
She has refused chemo and radiation. And can't swallow well.
She now has a feeding tube.
But thats not who she is. My mom is the strongest woman I know.
She is, like she is always been, very practical and straightforward.
No quality of life? She's out of here.
In her words, she has lived a good life. She's always been able to support herself and live in nice places. She was married and had two children. She divorced and has done well for herself.
And lucky for me, she has lived in Maui for 10 years and helped me raise my four children.
She has been there for me when the kids were born. When I was overwhelmed with diapers, feedings and no sleep.
Now she's letting me care for her. And I am lucky and fortunate that I can.

And the paintings? For the last few years my mom has been oil painting. And her paintings will be shown next month in Paia at a gallery. 120 Hana Highway. Opening night is August 13.

These photos were taken by Alisa Greig. And I will forever be grateful. And also to Richard Photo Lab for processing them and getting them back to me in a very short time (think 2 days).

Thanks for listening and looking. I love my mom and so does everyone who knows her.
This time I have left with her is precious and too little.

And in times like these, I remember why I love photography so.

Jessica and JJ finally did it. After 9 years of being together, this cute couple decided to fix up a wedding in a day or two while on vacation on Maui.

My favorite thing was the fact that after 9 years, they were still as "in love" as any couple I've seen.

FACES OF HAWAII 2011 | Maui Wedding and Family Photography

Last year I entered the Faces of Hawaii competition, and was denied being featured in the book, but got an image into the exhibit.

This year I entered the Faces of Hawaii competition, and one of my images made the book, while the other two made the exhibit only. That makes me happy.

The kicker? Hannah (my 9 year old) entered the Faces of Hawaii competition with one image. That image MADE THE BOOK! That makes me even happier.

My image of Hannah made the book. Hannah's image of her sister made the book. Those are the first two. The third and fourth are my images that made the exhibit only.

If you know me, you know I LOVE film.

Maybe am obsessed.

So when Richard Photo Lab (the premier place to develop your film) emailed and said they wanted to feature me on their Still Love Film blog, I was extremely honored.
